The Mystery Behind the Seven Falls

I have always been drawn to the element of water. That is why, I love destinations with waterfalls for they are powerful yet beautiful.

We all know that waterfalls are quite common in the Philippines from Iligan, Lanao del Norte as the “City of Waterfalls” to these famous seven waterfalls.

Seven Falls with most of them only has 2-3 falls that are possible to reach, reserving the top falls to the best trekkers. Stories of people who tried to reach and conquer all seven falls add mightiness to the quest.

Because of my job as a travel writer, I visited these Seven Waterfalls. In different destinations.

The most famous is the Seven Falls of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.

Then there’s the Seven Falls of Mambukal in Murcia, Negros Occidental. I only reached the first two falls.

Mambukal’s 2nd Falls. No place to swim. It directly pours to the first falls.

And then Bugtong Bato Falls in Antique which is also made of Seven Falls. The first three falls can easily be reached but only one of us went to the 2nd and 3rd falls. Extremely exhausted from a 2-day trek in Mararison Island.

Your travel writer can’t help but get curious about these “Seven Falls”. Why “seven”? Are there exactly seven falls?

Why is it that cascading waterfalls or mutli-level falls are always called ” Seven Falls”? I have asked the guides but they can’t answer my formulated mystery.

A little research and I learned that there are also Seven Falls in Sagada and Albay. Colorado also has the famous Seven Falls.

Maybe too much watching of CSI and History Channel, but I want to find out what is behind this phenomenon. If there is a scientific basis on seven levels of cascading waterfalls or something symbolic with the number seven.

If you know the answer or any idea, would you care to leave a comment? Or do you another “Seven Falls”?

  1. There are really 7 falls at Mambukal in Negros Occidental. I have climbed up to the 7th falls. I am not aware of any names for each of the falls. They are just referred to as 1st, 2nd, etc. Thank you for featuring these falls.

  2. Hi Hugh!

Wow, that’s amazing. How long does it take to trek all the way up to the 7th falls?

Thanks for dropping by and for your comment. Hope you can visit my blog again.

    Cheers,

  3. Last May, was my second trip to Bugtong Bato Falls in Tibiao, Antique. I stayed at Kayak Inn for two nights. I can not explain the peaceful feeling of staying in a nipa hut with nothing but the sound of the river, crickets and geckos at night while firefly watching. I love the trek to the falls and seeing the mini rice terraces.

  4. We also went to Tibiao last May. May 19, I think. We stayed in a “cottage” close to Kayak Inn. That time Kayak Inn’s owner was there with his own visitors.

Did you go up to the 2nd and 3rd falls?

  5. Last year we went up to the 2nd tier only. Last May, river trek and just a long walk to Tibiao Town Proper.
