Skateboarding 101: A Beginner’s Ultimate Guide

While on our usual weekend errands drive, my son pointed out to the small skate park in our city. “When am I going there?”, he asked. With his little grumpy face he reminded me that I told him he will skateboard one day. They only had a skate in front of our house but not in a skate park. I might give in to that plea- anything for them to move and enjoy the outdoors.

The anxious mom in me researched about skateboarding and I want to share it with you.  Skateboarding is fun and a real adventure, but it can be an issue for moms due to the potential injury our kids might get. But read on and hopefully your worry level will go down. For those who are interested to go professional or have a serious skateboarding career, hope this will also help you out.

Skateboarding has been a unique action sport passed on from one generation to another. It is not only a fun recreational activity but also an excellent transportation service, too. If you’re looking to entering the fantastic world of skateboarding, well you’re in the right place! Find the right skateboard for you

Yes, there are many types of skateboards out there. And some are designed purposely for beginners like you. If you have zero knowledge of the sport, ample research is necessary. According to research, here are some of the best skateboards for beginners:

  • Powell Golden Dragon complete skateboard
  • Penny Nickel Fade complete skateboard
  • ENJOI Skateboards WHITEY complete skateboard
  • Atom Drop Deck longboard
  • MINORITY 32 inch Maple Skateboard Sunset

Here’s a tip: don’t buy the cheap ones. They won’t help you get into the rhythm at that rate. Better to buy one at an actual skateboard shop with experts who will help you pick the right one for you.

Equip yourself with safety gear

As amazing and adventurous a life of skateboarding sounds, it is no stranger to accidents and injuries. Most accidents in the sport are recorded by beginners – including a few scratches, sprains, and/or broken bones – caused by falling from the board.

But don’t be afraid. With the right safety gear, you can save yourself from a trip to the emergency room. Essentially, a beginner should have a properly fitted helmet to protect your head, wrist guards, and elbow and knee pads for your arms and legs.

Wear comfortable clothing

Here’s the fun part: you can dress up like an actual skateboarder even as a beginner. From a cozy hoodie to thrasher clothing, the skateboard community has their own line of clothing where you can buy clothes from there.

Keep in mind that while practicing, you must wear comfortable tees like thrasher clothing in to focus better and get most of the experience.

Not your ordinary shoes

Don’t ever think about wearing your daily rubber shoes or sneakers to skateboard practice unless you want to have an accident. Make sure to buy skate shoes for you – these shoes have a better board feel, and a stronger grip over other shoes. They last longer too even with grip tape.

Find a safe spot to practice

The trouble with skateboarding is, often it is difficult to find a place to practice. If you live in a vehicle dominant city especially, you may find it hard, but if your area has a skate park, then lucky you. As a beginner, it is best to avoid dangerous courses at first and focus on cruising and getting your balance before heading on to the next level. Like any other sport, skateboarding is a process. Don’t rush and take baby steps – you’ll progress soon enough.
