How to Pick the Perfect Winter Coat

The air is getting colder and that only means – winter is coming! You may be living in colder places or visiting a winter destination, winter coats are not just fashion statements – unless you want to freeze.

There’s a lot to consider when you’re picking the perfect winter coat and finding the right coat takes time especially for those who live in warmer places. No need to worry, just follow these tips to make sure that you’re happy with your new outdoor wear:

Think about layering up

Do you need the thickest winter coat on the market? Many people automatically choose the thickest and snuggest coat, to get them through the coldest winter weather. In fact, you may find that you’re warmer and more comfortable if you go for one that’s slightly thinner.

By layering up, you give yourself more control. You can add and remove individual layers, to make adjustments as weather conditions change. The air pockets between different layers will also hold in the heat, making them more effective than you’d expect.

Know the difference between showerproof and waterproof

A waterproof coat is designed to stand up against heavy rain. Waterproof coats have waterproof layers that are actually a part of the clothing.

Water-resistant coats, or showerproof coats, are not made for winter storms. These, instead, have been treated with a water repellent coating.

Whilst a waterproof coat should withstand the worst of the winter weather, a water-resistant one can only be used for light rainfall. Knowing the difference between waterproof and water-resistant could save you from shivering and soaking.

Consider the pockets

When you’re out in winter weather, you don’t want to carry any more than is absolutely necessary. Does your winter coat have nice, deep pockets in which you can keep your keys and phone?

Many people don’t think about the importance of pockets until they just want to dash out and find that they’ve got things to carry. Suddenly, they’re forced to take an entire bag to keep their phone safe from the rain.

When you’re picking the perfect winter coat, consider the size of the pockets and whether they close for protection.

Think about coat length

Long coats are often winter favourites because they protect the top of your legs and offer more coverage than others. But, a long winter coat may reduce your overall flexibility.

Shorter coats leave you free to bend and twist as you need. If you’re very active, then they may be the better choice. But, bear in mind that they’ll leave your lower body exposed to the elements.

Evaluate materials and extra decorations

The winter coat with the fur hood is certainly a fashionable choice. But, is it what you want if you’ll be outside in bad weather?

A fur trim around your coat will quickly soak up any rain. It will weigh you down and feel uncomfortable touching your neck. It’ll also look like a recently-bathed cat. That’s not to say that a winter coat with a fur trim isn’t worth buying. But, perhaps you’ll need a second outdoor coat for when the sun isn’t shining. Winter coats with fur trims are extremely fashionable, but best reserved for days that are both cold and dry.

Likewise, long wool-blend winter coats are perfect for the fashion-conscious, but can only be used in dry weather or light rain and snow.

You might want to buy two winter coats, so that you’ve got one that suits all conditions, rather than trying to find one perfect winter coat.

Consider sustainability

It’s thought that up to 95% of textiles could be recycled, rather than being thrown away. When buying your new winter coat, you can do your bit for the environment. Buying second hand gives an old winter coat a new lease of life, and at worst all you’ll have to do is reapply the waterproof coating. You could save a fortune so that you can feel even better about your purchase.

So there you have it. Finding the perfect winter coat is not as tricky as you think it is. Follow the guide above and you’ll feel warm and chic at the same time.
