Devastating is an understatement to describe the wrath of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). With tsunami-like waves lashing out the city of Tacloban in Leyte, there are still other places badly hit by this super typhoon. One of them is Iloilo, specifically the northern part of the province.
Yolanda made her 5th land fall in Concepcion, a municipality with many island-barangays. And together with neighboring towns and the province of Capiz, they need OUR help. YOUR help.
After Yolanda passed, many towns were flooded and with debris, it was difficult for help to pass through.
Many areas in northern Iloilo are composed of islands. Beautiful and one of the local tourist spots but locals were cut-off from aid after the storm.
Houses were no match for the strong wind and waves..
No one is incapable of helping. You can help.
Yes you!
Here are some ways you can help Iloilo survivors of Typhoon Yolanda.
Volunteer for Iloilo Provincial Government
The Provincial Government of Iloilo needs more helping hands to repack relief goods from various donors. The more and faster they are repacked, the faster they will get to survivors in northern Iloilo. Invite your friends and follow the instructions of the organizers.
Donate to Gawad Kalinga-Iloilo
Gawad Kalinga is an non-Government, non-profit organization that aims to eradicate poverty by empowering local communities from building shelters to livelihood programs. Gawad Kalinga Iloilo’s villages were damaged by Typhoon Yolanda and they are currently doing relief operations.
The main reason why you should help Gawad Kalinga Iloilo is that they go beyond giving food packs. Your donations can go further from building new homes and hopes to move on from this calamity.

Drop posts for donations and packs
There are many centers and areas where you can give your in kind donations. From churches to malls, you can also ask any schoolchild for their school’s relief programs and give your aid.
We at PAREF Westbridge School for Boys have the Oplan Bulig Yolanda Victims. We repack what we have collected for the day and deliver them the next day. One of the beneficiaries is Sitio Buenavista, Barangay Alibayog in Sara, Iloilo. As of this writing our school will distribute goods to Ajuy, San Dionisio and other northern towns of Iloilo. If you want to help, please leave a comment below for me to give you more information on how to help and donate.
Each University of the Philippines campus is also a relief center. I applaud this idea of ready-to-deliver family packs.
You can also drop your donations in SM City Iloilo for their Operation Tulong. They are stationed at the Lower Ground Floor, FoodCourt.
SM Iloilo delivered these relief packs in Ajuy and will continue to bring more aid in other towns.
Directly help one family
Do you know someone whose family survived Typhoon Yolanda? Give your aid to them. Assist them. A small amount to someone you know is already big for those who need even the most basic needs like clean water.
You can also give your donations to them to bring and share with their neighbours. Remember your survival kits you prepared for Yolanda? Those canned goods and candles? Give it to them.
You see, there is no reason why you can’t help. You don’t have to give cheques or big boxes. You don’t need to shell out cash even. Small act of kindness means a lot of those who need your help. Be a community helper!
