It’s the Chinese New Year once again!
Chinese refer to their own Lunar Calendar to celebrate the beginning of a new year; and for this year it is the year of the Ox.
Chinese believe that each year correspond to the animals that Buddha summoned like the ox, rabbit, rat, boar, monkey, rooster and many more. It is their belief that the destiny and future for each year whether in terms of economy and love, depends on the “attitude” of the animal.
Predictions
Here are some of the predictions that fung shui experts say for this year of the Ox:
- businesses and finances will focus on saving rather than spending ( I think most of us are doing this already due to the global crisis
- with the inclination of the Ox to the earth and building; skilled workers and those whole lay foundations in the society like teachers will do good this year
- for romance, this is not the year for those who love to play the fields. Commitment rules this year.
Festivity
I myself do not refer to those “horoscopes” and predictions; destiny lies in my hands. What I look forward to in every occasion are the festivals and merry-making. And in the case of the Chinese New Year, I love the Lion-dance. I have seen this symbolic practice many times on TV but it was only last year that I really saw it live!
Of course, their Rice cake or pudding, locally known as tikoy is the equivalent of turkey during Thanksgiving. This sticky cake symbolizes unity within a family; the sticky texture of the cake is like the strong bond that every family should have.
Local Chinese community also celebrate their heritage during this year. In the case of the Philippines where there are many citizens with Chinese ancestry, they still observe this holiday.
