The Vibrant City of Toronto

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Niagara Falls, Canada

I’ve always been wishing to visit Canada for a short holiday for a long time. As what one of my colleagues once told me, this country is like a mosaic with different nationalities coming together with their own culture and contribute to the whole Canadian identity- they never lose their own ethnic identity to blend in to their new home.

And one of the cities that is well visited is the city of Toronto. The capital of Ontario and one of the financial hubs of the country, this city receives millions of visitors each year. One of my projects as a freelance writer was about cheap flights to Toronto and like any writer, I learned a lot – flying to Toronto is not that expensive at all!

With these cheap flights to Toronto, this city is now more accessible for those on a budget and even for international travelers like me who would love to have a less costly airfare to Toronto. If you are wondering why I would love to visit this city, Toronto is home to world famous attractions like the Niagara Falls and the CNT Tower.

I specifically would love to see the Niagara Falls myself and will be thrilled to write a feature in one of my future assignments a a freelance writer. More than a beauty, this falls is truly one of Mother Nature’s best creations. So if you are planning to visit North America, fly to Toronto and experience this wonderful city…

My Vigan Travel Article Published

Friday, February 12th, 2010

ilocos 031

It’s been a long time since I wrote my last blog post here. Sorry, I have to prioritize some writing assignments. Sometimes, life as a freelance writer can be as busy as that of a CEO.. :-)

But today I’m thrilled to share something here in my blog..another article published!

Any freelance writer dreams of seeing and reading their works published. Though I’ve been eyeing on writing in local magazines, to be published in an online travel magazine is an accomplishment for me.

My article about Crisologo Street in Vigan just published in The Circumference which features unique travel experiences. I love this site and their team! And my recently-published Vigan article is my fourth article featured in their site. I have written about Hanami ( the Sakura Viewing of Japan), Guisi Beach of Guimaras Island and the Ati-atihan Festival of Aklan.

Call me idealistic but I truly  feel very proud of sharing Philippines to the rest of the world through my works. I still have to write more travel articles for them but I guess, my hands are still full with other assignments as a freelance writer  that I can’t finish them all yet.

If you love to travel, you should read the experiences featured in TheCircumference. I love their unique approach to travel writing. To read my article, click here!

Religious Sad-Sad: Tracing the Origin of the Dinagyang Festival

Monday, January 25th, 2010

sad-sad

The city of Iloilo’s Dinagyang 2010  finally came to a successful end yesterday. Like any other Visayan festival, this celebration is marked with street dancing with elaborate costumes. But amidst those merry-making activities is the religious affiliation of these festivals – the devotion to the Infant Child Jesus, Senyor Santo Niño.

sad-sad

The history of Dinagyang can be traced way back in 1969 when the image of the Santo Niño ( Holy Child) of Cebu was brought to Iloilo in San Jose Parish Church, which is located very close to the center of Iloilo City. As they welcomed the Holy Child in their city, merry making started and as years go by, they have added their own tribal history of how the Malays settled in the island with the Aetas. The result is the present-day Dingayang of tribal dancing while giving homage to the Santo Niño.

sad-sad

The highlight of the festival is the street dancing and tribe competition but we preferred to witness and participate in the religious sad-sad last Saturday, January 23. The religious sad-sad is more solemn as you cannot expect any rowdy tourist or dancer in this event. After all, as a freelance writer, I am more interested in the real essence of Dinagyang. The word “sad-sad” is a Hiligaynon word for “street dancing” and with the term “religious” added to ther activity, it is obviously a dance with a religious purpose.

Though it was hard to reach San Jose Parish Church from our place in Jaro when many roads closed for the main event the day later, we finally arrived in the church. There were TV crews and some writers from local newspapers covering the event and as a humble freelance writer, I was thrilled to share the event in this blog.  The sad-sad reminds me of Sinulog, prior to the mass commercialization -how people dance their petitions as well as their loved ones’ to the Holy Child. From good health to a boyfriend or girlfriend, devotees danced, praised and asked for their sincere intentions to the Holy Child Jesus.

sad-sad

It was nostalgic for me as the crowd shouted the familiar phrases like “Pit Senyor, kang Mama kini” ( Pit Senyor, this is for Mama) and the likes which was the same when I was growing up in Cebu. And how little children were carried in their father’s shoulders as they danced for health and prosperity. With some music in Hiligaynon even the most classic Sinulog music was played to accompany the dancing. And no Cebuano can’t recall that music or help but to jive to that joyous beat.

Here is the video of the Religious Sad-sad. Enjoy!

Negros Occidental: More than just a Sugarlandia

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

A freelance writer turned storyteller, this is what I want to achieve every time I’m traveling. And as we travel by land from Iloilo City to my parents’ house in Cebu, we pass through Negros Island, a place famous for its vast sugarcane plantation.

But I love Negros Occidental not just for its grandeur as a sugar depot and home to some of the country’s most riches and affluent families but to what its nature has to offer. There are many adjectives to describe each place we saw while on the road but if I were to choose one, the word is scenic.

Here are some of the interesting places that will leave you awed. And as a freelance writer, I can’t wait to write them in my blog.

Panoramic View of San Carlos City

Overlooking the mountains of San Carlos City

The Panoramic View of San Carlos City.

We traveled uphill to reach high altitude which will make you open your windows to feel the fresh air. We often stop at Jilla’s Cafe for that aromatic native coffee.

Rice Terraces in Negros?

Rice Terraces just outside San Carlos City

Who said you have to go to the Moutain Province in Luzon to see the Rice Terraces?

Finally, the local farmers took advantage of the abundant irrigation system to yield their crops. Years ago, there were only few terraces but now, viola! I wonderful site! This is only a few kilometers away from the town center of San Carlos City.

The falls is more visible during rainy days..

Malatan-og Falls

It was very sunny that time so the waterfalls was not that visible. Still it is a refreshing site and worth a few shots. You can see this if you are in Don Salvador Benedicto.

cebu08-204.jpg

One street lined with sweet-smelling pine trees!

My favorite sight in Negros Occidental!

More than a kilometer of spiny pine trees, who needs to go to Bagiou?

This is still in the municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto  and because of this, the town won an award from the DPWH.

A must see!

So, the next time you want to visit Iloilo, Boracay or Cebu; skip the plane or ship. Take a land trip instead! For those who don’t have their own vehicle, a V-Hire or Ceres Bus pass through this route.

Iwag: Festival of Lights, Pototan Iloilo

Friday, May 29th, 2009
Iwag 2008

at the entrance of the town square

Deciding for my a post for my site as a freelance writer, I remembered our short trip to Pototan with my parents. I remember how excited I was to write something about this festival and here I am, sharing “Iwag 2008″ and promoting this Philippine festival.

The Visayan word, “Iwag” means, ” to light” or “to put light”…

The Festival of Lights of the municipality of Pototan in Iloilo is an annual showcase of different Christmas lights. The whole town center, from their town plaza and government offices close to the town square is lit up..

The “Belen” with my son

The tallest Tree filled with little "parols"

Pototan which is a few kilometers from Iloilo is also known as the biggest rice producer in the whole province. But during Christmas season, people from neighboring towns and cities flock to their town square to witness this impressive display of Christmas lights.

The good thing about this occasion is that the decorations are pertaining to Filipino Christmas. You can see different stars, known as “parols” and the traditional nativity scene or “belen“.

It is not surprising why Pototan is called the “Christmas Capital of Western Visayas“.

If you visit this place during night time during the holidays, you will really feel Christmas.. and if you are a freelance writer deciding what post to make during the holidays, Iwag is the one!

Travel Writing

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I love traveling and I love to take photos of where I have been. Add my job as a freelance writer, it’s very nice to share to my audience places that I have visited like telling a story. And as we know, traveling is also costly with me saving for some time to travel to other parts of my country.

By the way, I’m in a mission to explore my country–with more than 7,000 island, I wish to visit all the provinces in the Philippines. I want to explore Luzon like Ilocos, Mountain Province,Batangas and Batanes. Palawan is still in my wishlist. For Mindanao, I wish to visit Davao and Siargao.

With this, I aim to become a travel writer. There was a time that I woke up with an idea of having a travel site- specifically targeting our local tourism. There are many places in my country that I still have to explore and so many things to improve to make my country attractive to other tourists. I’m still getting some information on how to become one.

What I have started though is writing web content articles for a traveling agencies covering European destinations. Also, I’m now a member of an online travel magazine; I still have to start my travel blog in that website as well as submitting my articles.

With this, I have this illusion of getting VIP treatment from a resort that I’m going to feature in my article. If you have any ideas on how to become a travel writer, please share it with me. In my Twitter, I twitted how I’m dying to become a travel writer. It may not be very easy especially that I have a toddler who is going to school this year.

But to have a trip and an assignment to finish once in a while sounds perfect for me…

A Cup of Joe for the Rainy Day

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Lately, the weather is so frantic – I think for more than a week now. Just last night, we had a gale which scared me a little….heavy wind that seemed like a tornado..And when we went for a vacation in Boracay last week,  it was also rainy and then up the sun in any time of the day.

And this crazy weather makes my son cranky and sick which in the end disturbs my work as a freelance writer. And thunderstroms scares me a little which makes me turn off my computer..

kape

But a cup of coffee makes me relax on this  crazy      weather — summer with heavy rains?!! It’s really crazy.. I don’t demand much from my coffee, I can have it black with no cream–I’m all set..

It’s good to hold a hot mug while the raindrops drizzled in my window pane. All that is lacking is a soft cushion by the window and I would like the girl in the classic Nescafe commerical..:-)

How about you? What do you during heavy rains or when the weather is simply unpredictable?

Freelance Writing and Your Life

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

After so many months, I chatted with another freelance writer and in one of our conversations, she asked me how I juggled freelance writing and family life.  Even if you are in a different craft, freelance writing can be confusing. As I have mentioned in my earlier posts, it is hard to put a line between work and your personal life, even if you are still single – in a relationship or not.

picture-225

Why is it important? The obvious reason might be to be focused on what you are doing without your kid/s, asking you to play with her/him.But also, to be productive; many freelancers are guilty of spending too much time on the net without working. And in this field of freelancing, no work means no pay.

So here are my tips for those who want to be productive as well as focused in their freelance work.

Set a schedule

This was my answer to that freelance writer who asked me about juggling my work and family. Like any job, you must have a schedule- everyday and every week.

On my case, I try not to write during weekends unless I have urgent things to do or I have some free time. I dedicate weekends for my whole family especially for my husband who works so hard during the whole week.

Also, I work when my son is sleeping and when I’m done catering my husband’s needs- two hours in the afternoon and after 10pm. So on the average, I work at least 5 hours a day.

Shifting schedule with the nanny

I don’t wake up at 6am since I sleep late at night working. Also, freelancers with kids especially mommies must not totally leave her/his kid to the nanny. What is the purpose of working at home if you can’t spend time with your child?

I leave my son with the nanny in the morning usually from 6am ( when he wakes up) to 10am. And in the afternoon ( 4pm-6pm).

On my part, I play with him before lunch and his afternoon nap. When he wakes up, I play and eat snacks with him before giving him to his nanny for his playtime with our neighbors. Before dinner, I spend time with him until he falls asleep.

Inform or give the yaya an idea of your work and stress that you don’t want to be disturbed as much as possible. You may be able to  spend time with your child during ” your schedule” as a break or just to spend time with your son but make it sure with the nanny that she should handle your child during those times.

Train your child

Children can be easily be trained and taught. It was easy for me since I started this business of freelance writing when my son was still a little boy; so he is already used to Mama working on the keyboard and taking down notes.

My son knows our schedule and will not bother to knock on the door in my “little office”. I also close the door to show that “Mama is working”. But if I hear that my son wants me ( without being bratty or spoiled); I automatically stop and cater to him for a few minutes.

For those who have older children, tell them that you have to work and will play with them in a little while. If you are not working or done, spend time with them. This way, they will know that you really want to be there as long as you have the time.

Let them work with you

image0055

This works with those with older kids. Children   want to imitate adults and if they “disturb” you,   give them something to work on. I let my son scribble or color his books if he wants to stay      with me. I also have an old laptop that he can        use pretending doing what I’m doing.

The tips above may let you organize your working schedule with kids around.

To end up, I feel very contented with my life as a career woman and as a woman. In this craft of freelance writing, it is a matter of setting priorities and making most of the time you have.

Freelance Writing: Do’s and Dont’s when Writing Articles

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

This post is to answer someone who asked me about the “do’s and dont’s of Article Writing”. Thank you for the idea…here it is. I hope you will learn something to boost your career in freelance writing.

In general, there are two things to remember when writing any article; they must be original and of high quality. This post will elaborate so please read on…

1. Copied work and plagiarism.
To be frank, we are not that trained to make our work original way back in our thesis, essays and term papers. It’s like we are tempted to copy some sentences and add it to our project so it can become 5 pages or we are “confident” that our teacher may not know. Well, as a teacher; we always know. The words and ideas are too perfect and not that coherent with the rest.

In freelance writing, clients are very anxious that you will give them copied work. In the end, its their names who will be jeopardized and “flagged” by Google. But there are times that we have the same wordings to other works even though we really made it. The easiest is to check your work with the online tool, Article Checker or Copyscape if you have it before submitting to your client. Make the necessary changes to make it 100% original.

2. Spend time researching for your topics.
Some might consider “researching” for your topic a waste of time especially if you are writing a very short web content article. But researching by getting some key points and facts can save you time when writing. You must have some piece of paper and jot down all the necessary facts that are important for your article. This can save you time once you are writing your article. You will not be “lost of words” and your ideas are there already; you just have to combine them all.
3. Never rush your articles.
I have experienced being so loaded with many assignments because I got addicted to getting projects ( I will discuss this in another post; kindly remind me..lol) that I don’t have time to write them all in the best that I could. If you rush your articles, it will turn out so mediocre and you lose your client.

4. Make your article “readable”.
Online article writing gives opportunity to those people who are not ” walking dictionaries” to publish their works. Majority of people who use and read contents in the internet are just like us so keep your words simple. I read in one article that your work should not prompt our readers to look for a dictionary. Unless you are writing some specific articles like insurances, medicals and the likes where you need to add some jargon.
5. Grammar and Spelling.
Review your basic grammar in case you forgot. Do not rely on the spelling and grammar check of your computer since it can outlook some errors. Manually edit and check your work. Read and read your article before submitting it to your client.

6. Avoid “Fillers”.
A client asked you to write a 600-word article about “losing weight” and you are completely lost with words; you are still with 400 words. Some writers would make their sentences to long and repeating some ideas over and over again just to reach the number of words. Now, this is not good especially for readers, this will no longer interesting to read. Your work should be concise and direct to the point.

7. Make headings
To make your article readable, make at least one heading. For example your writing an article about “Losing Weight”; your article should look like this

How to Lose Weight

__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________

Foods to Eat and Avoid
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

Exercises to Start with
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

Above, you made two headings which are ” Foods to Eat and Avoid” and “Exercises to Start With”. Having headings will only make your article organized but it can be easier for you to meet the number of words required. So it is easy to make a 600- word article if you do this; just allocate the number of words to each part.

There you have it, some of the things to keep in mind when writing any article. If you have other ideas, feel free to comment…

Why I Stick with Freelance Writing

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

After a year of working as a school teacher, I have decided to quit my job to spend time with my baby. I have many guilt on being far from him during his infancy and I remember going to church, praying to still have a career while spending time with my son. And just recently, my husband asked about how I’m doing with my freelancing and if I’m happy working at home. A simple smile on my face is an assuring answer to my husband.

Money and time – that what I asked for. And I have it now, as a freelance writer. With the bliss I have now juggling both career and family time, many times I regret not to know about freelancing writing. I was so ignorant!

I forgive myself and I just enjoy the benefits of being a freelance writing. I don’t have a boss, I don’t have to be presentable to work and I don’t have to sacrifice my son. My clients are my clients, they can’t nag me when they are stressed or I don’t have to deal with parents questioning about their child’s grades. I don’t have to spend the night preparing my presentations but rather, reading “Gulliver’s Travel” to put my son to sleep.

time for swimming, anytime of the week

time for swimming, anytime of the week

And to top it all, I earn more than I used to be and now contributes to our household expenses, not to mention sending my brother to college. There might be some disadvantages but I am more inclined to the benefits of freelance writing.

Hence, I highly suggest mothers to work as a freelancer or a freelance writer if you are into this carft. I still hire a nanny to help me when I have tons of articles to write but I have lots of time to answer to my child’s cries.
