Guimaras is a small island in the Visayas known for its white beaches and sweet mangoes. Guimaras is not as commercialized like Boracay Island ( the most famous island in the Philippines) and most of all the rates are way way cheaper.
What can you do there besides swimming?
Island Hoping for less than $20 you can rent one motor boat that can accommodate 5-6 people for an hour and a half. You can visit many islets like the Turtle Island, Tres Maria ( three Maria’s) and many more. You can also include visiting a fish sanctuary of the University of the Philippines with 20-year old fishes and other marine animals.
Camping
You can stay overnight in one island for a very cheap price for the ultimate solitude of your life. A small boat will bring you to the small island and fetch you the next day. Make sure to leave nothing but memories…
Extreme Sports
Head off to the mountainous area of the island to have some dirty clear fun. This small park have gadgets for AirSoft, pinBall and other war games as well as bungee jumping. A bonus, they can arrange lunch for the rest of your group.
To end up, Guimaras is an island waiting to be explored by tourists. But the lovely view and fresh air will just let you stay in the beach and lie down all day…

Hi…From the port in Lonney ( where most ferries from Bacolod arrive), you go to Ortiz wharf ( just take a jeepney; you can ask around too)..Boats bound for Guimaras dock in Ortiz Wharf. It’s very close to the pier where you will dock from Bacolod.

Good afternoon Valerie, it is of great pleasure knowing that you spend time to promote or spreading good words about Guimaras. May I ask, are you in favor for big tourism in Guimaras?
Are you happy for for the island to be commercialized? Does it interest you if Guimaras is to become the next big thing like Boracay?
I was born and brought up in the island and it saddened me to think that big tourism and commercialism will be the destruction of this unique and natures gift to all the islanders. It is heartbreaking to fast forward the ill effect of all this “so called” improvements. I would beg everyone in power (government officials) NOT to allow Guimaras to be destroyed.
Lets open our eyes, widen our understanding, consider the very community since Guimaras exist and the generations to come. We all welcome anybody but PLEASE. . . love what we loved and care what we cared.
A great example for DESTRUCTION are: PUERTO GALERA (Mindoro), BORACAY, parts of CEBU, anywhere where it has been over developed for the soul purpose of commercialism and profits.
Bulldozing the ground to construct big buildings can only lead to a harrowing ill effects for the environment. Worst of all Guimaras will not be able to cope with mega waste. Therefore, the only solutions we will have is to redirect these horrible waste to sea, thus contaminating our sea water. Even if we are to bury all this waste under ground, eventually it will drained down to our underground river channels thus bringing all sorts of illnesses to the community.
May I also point out THAILAND, a dream destination for all years ago, great beach, tremendous food, beautiful scenery and very friendly people. Right now, famous areas has become a magnet to drug users, too many businesses had closed down, the boom has past and those who can afford to leave has turned their back without any regard as to what they have done to the place. Lets be honest and accept, anyone wanting to build big businesses in the island are only there to grab as much as they can (profit wise), if and when they are no longer making profits ‘bye bye’ na lang.
I really hope and pray our local government will take good controls and be guided as to what is best not only for the island but also for the people. Especially those in old(ish) category, may they choose to preserve Guimaras for their children and grandchildren’s sake.
Thank you for your very fruitful comment. I love Guimaras very much and part of it because it is very unspoiled. Aside from relying on the efforts of our government, it is also a big challenge for tourists and travelers. We should only leave memories not trash, etc. The locals should also help in minimizing the effects of tourism to their society. In short, everyone should take their part in preserving the beauty of a destination.
