Church of the “Angry Christ”

Church of the Angry Christ

The Church of the “Angry Christ” is one of the must-sees when you are on an adventurous road trip in Sugarlandia. Its moniker ” Angry Christ” is enough to ring all those curious ears.

One of the best things of being a travel writer is to be visit places during “working hours”. Never mind getting lost, trips like these make me appreciate my job as a freelance writer.

Here is what I wrote in my article, Negros Occidental: Sugar-Free published last month in Mabuhay Magazine ( Philippine Airlines’ in-flight magazine)

“This controversial chapel used abstract expressionism to depict Jesus. Many Catholics disapproved of the brown-skinned and “less merciful” portrayal of Christ”.

Led by a team of artists, the result is bold and a striking work of art. This chapel is located inside the Victorias Milling Corporation and one of the owners’ descendants is the lead artists who was even featured in Life Magazine.

If you are an artist or an art lover then you will admire this chapel. It is a very unique house of worship and for me is already an art gallery. Look at these mosaic for baptism rites

Church of the Angry Christ

Do you know other chapels or churches akin to the Church of the “Angry Christ”? And take note, it was done in the 70s when abstract expressionism was not that popular yet.  Maybe some of the kids attending service get scared of that “stern” look from the altar. But me, I love it! Very outstanding.

Getting there:

The Church of the Angry Christ is located in Victorias City, 29.79km north of Bacolod. Take a bus (php35) bound for Victorias City or for San Carlos City via Escalante and get off at the city plaza. Hire a tricycle going to Victorias Milling Corporation’s chapel.

FYI. Victorias Milling Corporation is the largest in the country. Never leave without taking a photo of this old train! My son loved it!
