Caught by the Cronut Craze

Fat people like me obviously love food. We don’t care about food fads but cronut got me crazy. It started when I tasted one great doughnut, which is one of the rarest food that I don’t like.

Doughnut is not a staple in this country. Pan de Sal yes, but not doughnut. With that nice doughnut, I was curious about cronut. Cronut is the hybrid of croissant and doughnut invented by French chef, Dominique Ansel of Ansel Bakery in New York.

A craze with people lining up the bakery early and limited with 2 cronuts per customers. Advance booking is also needed for some orders. Heidi Klum flew boxes of cronuts on a private plane.

Of course, various versions were served around the world. Even Krispy Kreme has their own and because Chef Ansel patented the word “cronut”, these yummy treats come in different names.

Let’s go back to my craving…

I had it not in my home city of Iloilo but from our neighbor -Bacolod. An unplanned Sunday trip for my son’s football game in Negros and we stayed at Chalet L’Fisher. And lucky me, there was a big signage of its C’s Bakery for cronut!

Cronut in Bacolod! Finally!

C’s version is the “croinut”. Tried to apply my French lessons but the waitress can’t understand, so “CROO-nut”. haha.

Had my first taste of cronut by the rooftop pool of Chalet. Good thing, the rooftop restaurant of Chalet have to get it from the bakery below and served still warm while I was sipping my coffee.

First impression? Its smell reminded me of “shakoy“, which is twisted doughnut.

Hello cronut..

The taste? Worth the calories! haha.

I was not expecting that much, sorry. I thought it’s just another fancy creation but it was REALLY good. Yum yum yum. I can’t compare it to the New York’s but I judged it as a pastry. Smells and tastes fantastic. Crisp in the outside, a little flaky but moist especially when you start chewing.

Bacolod’s C Bakery offer many flavors, so aside from the original, I ordered the Chocolate glazed which was really bathing in chocolate. Haha.

My husband found it too sweet but this little guy really finished it all. Very unusual for this little kid.

Amazed and maybe I was a little guilty of expecting less from Bacolod’s version of cronut, it is not hard to believe. Bacolod is one food destination. They don’t just settle for local cuisine but they create other cuisines without being second-rated especially when it comes to sweets and pastries. After all, Bacolod is in a land of sugar.

Again, C’s pastries are prepared by a French chef, Denis Laumône. I think that also explains everything. For me, cronut relies on how good your croissant dough is and French knows it best.

There are cronuts in Cebu and one of my high school friends said it was not nice…shakoy tastes way better. haha! But I love the ones in Bacolod. So happy it I don’t have to travel far.

There are many versions of cronuts in Metro Manila of course but if you are in Bacolod for MassKara or any reason, try cronuts in Bacolod. Something new from Calea’s ice cream cake  and other cake shops in the city.

It was a lovely Sunday in Bacolod. Cronut and brewed coffee.
