Bacolod Cathedral

Noted for its sumptuous chicken inasal and MassKara festival, there are more attractions in Bacolod for its tourists to check-out. One of these is the San Sebastian Cathedral or Bacolod Cathedral which is also one of the city’s landmarks.

If you arrive from the port, its slender belltowers greet you as if enticing you to drop by to this historical piece of art.  Bacolod Cathedral is one of the many stone churches in the Philippines and this particular church was built a century after a parish was established in Bacolod from 1876-1885.

In terms of materials, this church was built from coral stones transported from the neighboring island of Guimaras ( I can only imagine that Guimaras used to be an uninhabited place). When you look at this church, you will see that its facade has been layered with white cement.

Calamities as well as wars contributed to its wear and tear. In 1969, Bacolod Cathedral experienced massive renovation. Some of its components like its bells were taken down as they posed harm to the public.

If you are freelance writer or a photographer, drop by to San Sebastian Cathedral whenever you are in town. The cathedral like other churches in every destination is one of Bacolod’s tourist attractions and must-see while in Sugarlandia. Its convent is also a nice place to feature but I guess it deserves another blog post.

Thanks for reading! 🙂
